The social media age has had quite the affect on human relationship.

Instead of having a small circle of close friends who we check in with regularly, we now have hundreds of “friends” all stored conveniently in our social media network. Why call and see how so and so is doing, we can check their Facebook. Birthday? Post on their wall. Most of our human to human contact is now displayed through a screen.

It’s allowed us to stay in contact with hundreds of people, but it’s also distanced us away from those few who should be close. No longer do you hear or see those human idiosyncrasies that strengthened our bond amongst ourselves. Because of smartphones, any activity your friends is tracked right in your pocket: always around, but never truly there.

With all of these “friends” and followers, we lose track of the ones that matter. It’s difficult to have a true circle of friends larger than ten, but social media has tricked us into thinking that hundred’s is the norm. We’re always told that there’s plenty of fish in the sea, but now we can see them, swimming around eagerly, waiting to be caught. In this case, plenty is just another word for empty.

Reality: Your Facebook friends don’t give a shit about you. They don’t. They’re simply a superficial extension of a real person: soulless, faceless and disloyal. And you don’t truly give a shit about them. How many of those friends would you fight for? Which friends would you take a Louisville Slugger to the back back of anyones skull for when they said the word? No explanation, no back story. Just do it. Would you?

It’s a dramatic analogy, but it makes you realize who’s truly important. There’s a high chance that you couldn’t name more than five people who you’d knock someone unconscious for, so why are we so focused on having hundreds (if not thousands) of friends and followers on networks where you’re only a mere hologram (Wuddup ‘Pac) of your actual self? Are many weak relationships more important than a few strong ones?

I don’t think so.

The only people in your life that actually matter are the ones who will be around at your weakest point. When you find out who they are, don’t lose them.

Loyalty is the only glue that can keep you together.

Why do you do what you do on a day to day basis?

Why do you wake up in the morning? Why do you go to school/work/gym/etc? Why do you drink after work, or watch television, or go on the internet? What is the purpose of everything you do?

I ask this because most of us don’t know.

We don’t know why we waste 40% of our day on Twitter, or Facebook, or watching Jersey Shore, or sports, and then tweeting, Facebooking and arguing about the things we just seen. The age of social media and smartphones has turned us into a very passive generation.

We don’t have anything to fight for anymore. We need to have these shitty programs created for us just so we have enough drama in our lives to keep our blood flowing throughout the day. We don’t have any real issues anymore so we need them created for us because, for the most part, we’re fine. We’re all surviving.

So what do we do? 

We want more. We chase after superficial things. That new car, new iPhone, new house, new pair of shoes. We’re all fed and sheltered and clothed. Our lack of real needs in our society has simply created more wants.

But if you want to have the same things as everybody else, then what does that make you?

It makes you passive. 

You lose your identity, you lose your vision, and worst of all, you lose your purpose.

And that’s why everybody’s lost. How can you have any kind of drive or intensity when you have nowhere to apply it? And when you do apply it, when you finally work up the courage to go out and get what you want and fight and grip and claw and scream until it’s yours…

You’re alone.

You notice that your old friends have nothing in common with you, your new friends aren’t loyal to you and anybody else is a flash in the pan. That’s the tradeoff. Intensity is an intimidating trait, and intimidation breeds fear, and fear is a much too common human trend that nobody seems to want to address. 

But you can’t walk anywhere worthwhile without stepping on someone’s toes.

So recently, while I was in Edmonton, Alberta for the last couple months, I felt I needed to find a hair dresser that did exactly what I want to my hair.. You know, always have to look clean cut in those suits! Anyway, a young Gentlemen by the name of Craig was brought to my attention. (What’s good Craig? Miss you Bro!) I then shortly had my appointment booked, and I was off to get my hair did by this locally famous hairdresser. Got to the salon, had myself an expresso and out came Craig. A young, well dressed & fashionable, very outgoing an funny dude to my surprise, which of course makes the whole experience more enjoyable. I personally enjoy conversation with my hairdressers, just me? After all was said and done, my cut turned out great. It was exactly what I wanted, with of course of few of Craig’s little twists. I then became one of Craig’s returning customers for the next few months while I was in Edmonton. Thanks Craig.

Fast Forward Mar. 2012…

I have never been to a barber shop, NEVER! I had always wanted to try going to one because they always looked so cool on TV. Go in, sit down and have a bunch of dudes laughing, having a good time and well, just plain out being dudes. I did a bit of research and each and every time one specific shop would up, “Stay Gold”. The ratings and feedback about this place were through the roof. I decided to make the phone call and book my appointment. So, I jump in my car and drive down the street to the more “Downtown” part of Fontana, CA. To many people downtown Fontana, would be what I guess people here in Cali would call “the boonies” or sure, the “ghetto”. I personally love it. So much culutre! Anyway, I park my car and walk in, and here is what I find..

If I could break it down for you in a few words or terms, they would be: Tattoos, Hot Rods, Rockabilly, Old School and Beer. This was the barber shop I was looking for. As soon as I walked in, I was in a small room surrounded by 5 old school barber chairs. I was immediately greeted by almost all of the barbers. They were all covered in Tattoos, stretched ears, beards, you name it.. Awesome. I sat in the barber chair, and a guy named Eric introduced himself to me and right away asked if I wanted a beer. (I declined, it was only noon.) Eric started cutting my hair with nothing more than the traditional scissors and straight razor. Being in that room was hilarious. All the other barbers where cracking jokes across the room, laughing and watching old school gangster flicks on a big plasma mounted on the wall. STAY GOLD is definitely gives you the whole, true “California” feel. Highly recommend this place to anyone if you’re looking for that old school, slicked back, pompadours or comb over look.
